United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
UNDP works in over 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
UNDP connects countries with the knowledge, resources and networks they need to achieve development breakthroughs. With deep local knowledge and a wide global network, we work with partners to end poverty and reduce inequality, while protecting the planet and championing human rights.
The sound management of chemicals and wastes is an important component of UNDP’s efforts to achieve sustainable, inclusive and resilient human development and the SDGs.
UNDP advocates for integrating chemicals-related priorities into national environmental and poverty reduction planning frameworks, helps countries access financial and technical resources, and provides technical assistance and implementation support for the economic transformation to sustainable production and consumption patterns and circular, carbon neutral, toxic-free, zero pollution and zero-waste societies.
UNDP’s Chemicals and Waste (C&W) Hub provides thought leadership and programmatic support to governments and partners on emerging issues, including scaling up sustainable, efficient and smart cooling; introducing circularity, systems thinking and change; creating Zero Waste Cities; and promoting innovative solutions to end plastics pollution:
UNDP supports international cooperation and coordination towards improved chemicals management through participation in the IOMC. As an Implementing Agency of the Global Environment Facility and the Multi-Lateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) and with support of bi-lateral donors, UNDP’s Chemicals & Waste Hub supports 144 countries in the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, the Stockholm Convention, the Minamata Convention, the Global Framework on Chemicals and helps countries tackle plastic pollution.
