Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

The work of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on strengthening Members’ capacities for the sound management of chemicals is implemented through:

  • Facilitating the implementation of the International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • Strengthening institutional and human capacities of Members on the sound management of pesticides through their lifecycles.
  • Jointly with UNEP, implementing the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade.
  • Jointly with WHO, developing international pesticide specifications through the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Specifications (JMPS).
  • Jointly with WHO, making recommendations for Acceptable Daily Intakes of food additives, pesticides and veterinary drug residues, and for Maximum Residue Limits in food for pesticides, food additives, and veterinary drugs, as well as for tolerable intakes of other food contaminants through the CODEX Alimentarius.
  • Jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), improving the agrochemical usage in food and agriculture.
  • Jointly with WHO, providing the Secretariat of the Joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, the executive organ of the joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, located in FAO Headquarters.
  • Jointly with UNDP, UNEP, WHO and other UN agencies, addressing emergency policy issues relevant to agrochemicals in Global Framework on Chemicals, including highly hazardous pesticides.
